I was ‘copying’ Wyclef Jean – 9ice



Veteran Nigerian singer Alexander Akande, aka 9ice, has mentioned he was sounding like Haitian rapper, Wyclef Jean, within the early days of his profession.

The ‘Photocopy’ crooner mentioned he wasn’t the one Nigerian artist copying Wyclef’s sound again then however he was higher than the remainder.

In a current interview with SPS, 9ice defined that he stopped copying Wyclef Jean after he found his personal sound.

He emphasised that his model of music is a fusion of his main inspirations like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Bob Marley, Ayinde Barrister, Kwan1 and Pasuma.

“My inspiration was Wyclef [Jean]. If anyone listened to me in the beginning, there was a time I used to be sounding like Wyclef 100 per cent. And there have been different people who had been sounding like him however they felt that I sounded higher than them with regards to sounding like Wyclef,” he mentioned.

“And from sounding like Wyclef, I obtained to my very own authentic sound. Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Ayinde Barrister, Kwan1, Pasuma and Obesere are the people who I listened to whereas rising up and so they fashioned my mix in music.”
