New cement price regulation law passed

The Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to control cement costs has been enacted regardless of resistance from cement producers and components of the general public.

Initially, the draft L.I. required producers to get authorities approval for setting costs, however this requirement has been eliminated.

The Minority in Parliament strongly opposed the L.I., designed to manage Ghana’s cement pricing.

Sponsored by Commerce and Trade Minister Okay.T. Hammond, the L.I. confronted sturdy opposition from cement producers who urged Parliament to reject it.

The Minority Spokesperson on Authorized and Constitutional Affairs, Bernard Ahiafor, argued that the regulation conflicts with the mother or father act, which units requirements for all items and providers.

“The mother or father act by its objects offers with all items and providers, that’s setting the usual for all items and providers together with the cement, and the understanding of the usual is controlling the standard of all items and providers produced and imported within the nation.”

Regardless of these objections, the LI has been enacted after 21 parliamentary sittings.

Okay.T. Hammond says the LI will result in a discount in cement costs throughout Ghana.

“I’ve persistently been arguing that we’re not being handled pretty by the cement-producing corporations. I’ve gone by way of plenty of literature, I’m past argument. There’s a specific amount of unfairness within the pricing of cement throughout the nation and I’m ready to ensure that there may be some sanity,” he stated.
